What did David know that we’ve forgotten? Worship music expresses a range of emotions, not just sunny proclamation. The word Hosanna not only declares God as our deliverer, but is also a cry for deliverance. Remove artificial constraints and write music that is honest, passionate, transparent and transforming. Are there emotions and expressions too personal for congregational worship? If so, where do you draw the line? Allow yourself to stretch beyond the comfortable where music occupies the expanse between despair and ecstatic praise, but don’t leave your congregation behind.
